Final Destination 5 follows the same premise as the first four Final Destination movies. A group of people cheat death when one person has a vision of a tragedy that is about to happen. 'Seeing' what is about to happen, the person saves his life and the lives of a handful of other people who are alerted by the person's claims. But death still comes to take each person in the order in which they should have died in the tragedy.
Final Destination Series
In the original movie in the series, a group of students and teachers get off an airplane just before the doors close. The plane explodes minutes after taking off, killing everyone on board. In the second movie, a young woman 'sees' a bad accident on the highway and saves a number of lives, including her own, by blocking an on-ramp. Movie number three is the story of a group of teenagers who escape a deadly roller coaster rise. FD4 details an crash at Nascar race where wreckage flies into the stands.
Final Destination 5
Final Destination 5 covers a group of colleagues on their way out of town for a work retreat. The bus they are travelling on stops halfway across a massive bridge due to road construction. One of the guys on the bus 'sees' the bridge collapsing and when he snaps out of the vision (for lack of a better word), he drags his girlfriend (who is also his colleague) out of the bus. A few others follow him, to try and get him to return to the bus as the duo leaving is an insurance risk. The half-dozen people get far enough away from the middle of the bridge to survive the collapse. Once the memorial service is over for their coworkers who died when the bridge collapsed, the survivors start dying one by one, in creative ways as Final Destination fans have come to expect.
The tall, black man spouting prophesies of death from the previous FD movies returns in this flick. He drops obscure innuendos about death and what is about to happen to the bridge collapse survivors. The survivors come to believe - wrongly or not - that if they take someone else's life, they will cheat death and be able to live for many years to come instead of facing imminent death.
Twist at the End
Unlike the other Final Destination movies, this one has a cool twist at the end. As I'm not a movie spoiler, I'll just say that they tie the events of #5 back to what happened in the first FD flick. While they did not set it up for another movie in the series, die-hard fans such as myself will keep our fingers crossed that Final Destination #6 won't be long in the making.
