Writing Prompts for December: Daily Freewriting Ideas

The holiday season is upon us but don't let your writing fall by the wayside. Use these writing prompts to keep the creative juices flowing.

Writing Prompts For the First Week of December

December 1st – You have been selected by a special Career Selection Committee to be a farmer. You have been told you have no choice, as the committee has spoken. What would you choose to plant or raise and why?

December 2nd – Can you find any treasures at garage sales or is everything junk? Explain. What are your feelings on garage sales?

December 3rd – Do you believe in the butterfly effect; the theory that a butterfly flapping its wings can create or abolish a hurricane or tsunami halfway around the world? (It's part of the chaos theory.) Why or why not?

December 4th – You lost your home and everything you own in a natural disaster -- an earthquake, tsunami, flood, forest fire, etc. Would you rebuild in the same spot or rebuild elsewhere? If you stay put, would you do anything differently with the rebuild? If you moved elsewhere to start over, where would you move to and why?

December 5th – Are dogs really man's best friend? Why or why not?

December 6th – Are 3D TVs here to stay, or are they a passing phase? Why do you think that?

December 7th – Is there any value for people in fad diets?

Writing Prompts For the Second Week of December

December 8th – People either love or hate vanity license plates; vehicle tags that you can get anything you want that is seven characters or less put on them. Which group are you in, the lovers or the haters? If you could get one, what would it read and why?

December 9th – You are now only allowed to have one food selection per meal for the rest of your life. What food would you choose for breakfast? How about lunch? And dinner/supper? Why did you choose those?

December 10th – What one handyman job did you wish you could do around the house? How would it change your life, if you had the ability to do it?

December 11th – What fairytale does your childhood most resemble? Common stories include "Cinderella," "Hansel and Gretel," "Beauty and the Beast," "Rapunzel," "The Three Little Pigs," and "Jack and the Beanstalk."

December 12th – Would you be willing to move to a city you hate for a job you love? Why or why not?

December 13th – Look up. What is the first thing you see? Write a poem about it.

December 14th – There are adult-only vacation resorts. What other adult-only places would you like to have available?

Writing Prompts For the Third Week of December

December 15th – You have been dropped at the airport and told that you have to go somewhere for ten days. There are three flights leaving soon and you have to pick one of those -- Buenos Aires, Argentina, or Nuuk, Greenland, or Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Which flight would you take and why?

December 16th – Was Barney the dinosaur a positive influence on children in the 90s? Do young kids nowadays have positive role models on TV?

December 17th – In some countries, the government pays for in-vitro fertilization and in some places it doesn't. Should the government pay or should it be a cost that is fully absorbed by the couple who are getting assistance with their infertility? Explain.

December 18th – Popcorn is the ultimate movie snack. If you had to open your own movie theatre and couldn't pick popcorn, what food items would you have on the order board and what would be your prices?

December 19th – Your diary has been discovered. What entry would you be most horrified to discover that people will read?

December 20th – Your pores are oozing a strange, green-tinged puss. You go to the doctor who says you have an unknown disease. What is the name of your disease, the symptoms and what you can do to manage it?

December 21st – Bob Barker has appealed to the government who have passed a new law -- every household must adopt a pet from the shelter in an attempt to help control the pet population. What kind of animal would you adopt, what would you name it and how would your life change with its newest member?

Writing Prompts For the Fourth Week of December

December 22nd – King Kong is back! Who would you like him to carry to the top of the Empire State Building and have him drop? Why did you choose that person?

December 23rd - Love at first sight -- is it a reality or a myth? Explain.

December 24th – If money grew on trees, how would that change the economy in your country?

December 25th – Today you have to invent your own holiday; you are not allowed to celebrate an already established one. Share the details about your holiday.

December 26th – Is the food labeling industry doing an adequate job of informing us about our foods? Why or why not? What changes, if any, would you like to see made?

December 27th – Mixed martial arts are growing in popularity by the day but some people say the sport is too violent. How far should sports be allowed to go into the violence realm?

December 28th – Justin Bieber's ride to fame grew rapidly after someone spotted a video of him on You Tube. Do you think teenagers have the ability and/or maturity to deal with the issues that come with intense fame?

Writing Prompts For the Last Few Days in December

December 29th – Experts say that everyone's relationships are centered around the fact that we all want validation in our lives. Do you agree or disagree with that statement?

December 30th – Will man be living on the moon in your lifetime? Why or why not?

December 31st - Reflect on the year behind you. Did you accomplish all you set out to do? What will you make sure to get done in the next 365 days?
