Writing Prompts For the First Week of May
May 1st – It's the first day of the month. There are 31 days stretching ahead of you before you have to flip the calendar page. If money was no object, what would you like to do this month that you have never done before and why?
May 2nd – What scientific discovery of the past few centuries do you believe has played the greatest role in the world we live in today?
May 3rd – Suburban sprawl is said by many to be a waste of land and is hurting the environment. What are your thoughts on suburbia and the it's impact on the planet?
May 4th – Is it possible to be lonely while in the midst of a group of people? Why or why not?
May 5th – 'Rules are made to be broken' is something many people believe. What is a writing rule you would never break? What rule do you happily break?
May 6th – The American Dream is the U.S. ideal that freedom includes the potential for prosperity and success. Do you believe the Dream is realistic and attainable for you regardless of where you live?
May 7th – Viagra has revolutionized sexual activity for men. Would a Viagra-like medicine for women do as well if it was available to the masses? Why or why not?
Writing Prompts For the Second Week of May
May 8th – If you had to create a new religion, what topics would you like to see discussed in the religion's holy book?
May 9th – Divorce has changed the dynamics of typical families in the world these days. What are your thoughts on divorce?
May 10th – Should lesbian or gay parents have any additional loop holes to jump through in order to adopt a baby? Explain why or why not.
May 11th – If you had to live in a board game (such as Monopoly, Life, Clue, Candy Land, Chutes and Ladders, Guess Who? etc.), which game would you pick and why?
May 12th – Do you think the United States has done an adequate job of securing their country from terrorists since 9/11? How effective have the measures they implemented in the past decade been?
May 13th – "Big Brother is always watching" is a common saying. How comfortable are you with having cameras on you at all times when you are in public places?
May 14th – They say humans use 10% of their brains. If you could increase your brain power to 20% or more, what aspect of your brain's ability would you increase if you could choose?
Writing Prompts For the Third Week of May
May 15th – If weather and climate weren't a consideration, how would you landscape your yard? If you don't have a yard, what does your ideal yard look like?
May 16th – Would you rather be smart but unattractive or beautiful and dumb?
May 17th – Birds migrate to warmer weather in the winter. If you were a bird and could migrate anywhere during the colder months of the year, where would you go and why?
May 18th – Swimming with dolphins is a popular vacation activity. If you could safely swim with any animal, what animal would you choose and why?
May 19th – Will movie theatres still be around in 20 years?
May 20th – If you needed to take a medication that affected your metabolism and, as a result, you had to reduce your food intake by 20%, what food(s) would you cut out of your diet? And if you were required to increase your food intake by 20%, what food(s) would you add?
May 21st – The world's population is increasing every day. It went from 5 billion in 1987 to 6 billion in 1999. We will hit 7 billion in 2012. What do you think could potentially happen to start the world's population on a backward slide?
Writing Prompts For the Fourth Week of May
May 22nd – Do you think men and women receive different levels of medical care? Why or why not?
May 23rd – Have we, as a nation, gone too far in our effort to be PC? Is political correctness an asset or a liability?
May 24th – There has been a great deal of discussion and research done in the past few decades about birth order and its massive effect on a person's development. For example, the firstborn child is usually the most intelligent, the baby of the family is creative and has better people skills, and middle children tend to be peacekeepers and are not as connected or decisive as their siblings. Do you believe birth order is a valid character assessment?
May 25th – The reality TV show Big Brother puts a dozen strangers in a house for three months. They can't take any electronic gadgets into the house; no TVs, computers, music devices, nothing. How would you spend your time if you had to entertain yourself for 12 weeks without technical help?
May 26th – Would you rather live in an earthquake zone or at the base of a volcano if you knew that sometime in the next 50 years there would be a massive quake and the volcano would erupt?
May 27th – Do you think the oil industry is keeping the world too reliant on the black liquid? Should we find alternative fuel sources?
May 28th – Some people haven't payed their taxes in years. Why do you believe they don't pay what they owe and how does it sit with you?
Writing Prompts For the Last Few Days in May
May 29th – Plastic surgery is becoming almost the norm in Western societies today. Do you think this sends a message to the younger generations? What are your personal views on cosmetic surgery?
May 30th – Will houses in 20 years be designed differently? What currently-popular features will be phased out and what aspects will be emphasized? What will your home look like?
May 31st – Looking back on your writing progress in May, are you satisfied with what you accomplished? What can you do to get closer to your writing goals next month?
